I've been thinking furiously lately about friendship and those who are friends. It seems that there is almost no end to those trying to define 'friendship,' so who am I to buck the trend.
There are, of course, different degrees of friendship.An adage I heard once, "
Nothing in the world is friendlier than a wet dog." A dog seems more than ready to have you share in its condition of 'wetness.' And cats too.Cats are cuddly and you can tell they love you when they came to u purring and 'bergesel' at your feet. But to my mind, that is not necessarily the best type of friendship in which to share.
On one level, friendships are very simple. They are the
bonds between people who enjoy one another's company. But probe deeper and it's evident that there is no consensus about what it means. Try talking to people about friendship and it becomes clear that while people value it and seek it, there is also
much confusion, hesitancy and disappointment about friends in many people's lives. Friendship is one of those areas full of hidden assumptions and unspoken rules. We only discover that our friendship doesn't mean what we think it does when those assumptions clash. Hmmm~~
Sometimes the people we deemed our friends are not really ours . But those who we thought didnt think an ounce about us were the one who are the first to come in time when we need some shoulders to lean on. I've got tonnes of friends many of whom I am still in contact with and even many more I had lost traced of . It is like they disappear into thin air. And there are friends who are just not like how I first met them.
They had changed. And I had changed. And when people changed they collide there's this kind of irreparable gap which appears. It is said we changed for the better but what if the change that made us grew apart from each other? What we need to sustained a long lasting friendship is
communication.Once you stopped talking for quite a period of time,the next time we meet trust me it just wont be the same anymore.
In this month of Ramadhan,I am really hoping that all those friends that I have today in this very minute and very second will still be my friends when the next Ramadhan comes and the Ramadhan after. Ameen Ameen Ya Rabbal Alamin.
The Arrow and the Songby
Henry Wadsworth LongfellowI shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,I found again in the heart of a friend.
